@Marco & Maciek:
Thank you for your fast reply!

Your description helped me, Marco, because I was now confident that I did
all in the right way. Nevertheless the scissor didn't work. Meanwhile I
found the reason. It's no bug - I just forget to adjust the snapping option
for the layer I wanted to split (Einstellungen > Projekteinstellungen >
Snapping-Optionen; Settings > Project Properties > Snapping Options (?))!

I tested a while and found out that this functionality seems to have it's
limits. A line with about 1.000 vertexes I was able to split. Trying it on a
line with 4.500 vertexes QGis crashed.

I will try the limits in Grass - now nowing to use v.in.ogr to import
shp-files...

A last think to my question about a merge tool. I wonder why QGis (by the
way: nor in gvSIG, OpenJump...) is not having such a thing. I don't want to
baa and I can't help it out because I'm not a programmer. But in practical
use it is a must have! E.g.: I work for a company which presents cycling
tracks for a federal state in Germany. The information about the tracks are
changing a lot. And due to the lack of central data pool we need to collect
data very often with GPS-Receivers. It's now quite convenient to import
those tracks to QGis.
But now I need all the options of digitising a line. Split the old line
(works - if not to many points) and merge the old one with the new one
visually (not working). And I still have some trouble to do it with the
geoprcessing tools ...
