Yes, that's one of the approaches I was referring to (and probably the most
promising). Apart from the fact that GDAL 1.6 is not yet available on many
platforms (but this is a transient issue), to be really usable by QGISsers I
think we would need a simple plugin that given a list (or a folder) of rasters
would build up a VRT.
