I'll have to wait until gdal 1.7.0 reaches ubuntugis: as my images are 
surrounded by "0" area of nodata, the current vrt shows the intersections as black
In 1.7.0 the following syntax will be possible:
gdalbuildvrt -vrtnodata 0 DMC_CIR2.vrt CIR8*.tif
