Kurt,

The crash on missing layers has been reported ( we can check the bug
tracker to make sure). In the meantime before it gets fixed you can make
sure that all the data files you need are in the same path location as
your desktop machine or manually edit your .qgs file to correct for
their location.

Look for lines like
<datasource>/scratch/GrassDB/NorCal/ttp/davisppl/1_point</datasource>

One thing important to remember is that the data itself, in this case
you Grass Dataset needs to be transferred too. The .qgs file only stores
 references to the datasets and general map information not data.

Depending on how interactive your conversation needs to be you can
always print your maps to pdf too.
