SHP is a secret and proprietary format, and it often changes in
unpredictable ways. There is no reliable free reader for it.

Awh, alright, the last point is not true probably, OGR and the like seem to
be very reilable and certainly free. But I'd like to remind readers that
SHAPE is NOT an Open format, it is proprietary ESRI, and although they don't
change it much these days and share the specs widely, that might change
overnight if Jack tells them to...
