I appreciate the feedback. I certainly went through and acted on those
entries to install the MrSID and ECW support earlier, i.e. before this last
series of attempts to get QGIS 1.4 operational. Isn't the functional
gdal_translate operation for ECW and MrSID proof of that? Certainly the
gdalinfo --formats comes up with:

Does it matter into which directories these gdal and QGIS
files/programs/libraries are loaded? There is a chance, in the confusion,
