Umm... well... you can always export out of GRASS the single bands as
separate rasters... (not sure if you need to avoid GRASS at all).

If you are interested to see the bands values in QGIS you can simply use
the "value tool" plugin. Too bad that in QGIS 1.5 is broken when it
comes to GRASS rasters.
