[Qgis-user] calculate area in polygon

ftools provides summary line length calculation as an attribute to a
polygon shapefile.  Is there a way to calculate area (in hectares, m^2
or whatever unit is defined in the project properties)?

I'm hoping to get this as a core-plugin.
