The problem is that Qwt5 is broken in ubuntu 9.10 Karmic.
The fix is described here

and I confirm that it works for solving the Qwt5 related probelms in QGIS
(i.e. Spectral profile, Scattergram, Terrain profile).

Anyway, I should upgrade to ubuntu 10.04 ...
