There is definitely a learning curve between these tools. I also used 
mapinfo a lot *before*. No I use qgis for almost all GIS tasks. I DON'T 
regret mapinfo! Except a few things: the mapbasic window that writes 
whatever action you do with the GUI was really handy. Also the 
ultraflexibility of mapinfo in handling dozens of different CRS: this 
sometimes lacks in qgis (see other threads going on about australian CRS 
in this list).
But the ability to open .mif-mid's, .shp's, .tab's directly in qgis 
without conversion is just excellent! And countless other things.

Now, one warning: if you have worked in the most "dirty" way in mapinfo 
(this software sometimes doesn't discourage you to do so...), i.e. 
assigning directly colours, linestyles to objects, or mixing lines, 
polygons, texts in one layer, you may get a bit disappointed: you cannot 
do such things in qgis. You have to work in a clean way. Like Brent just 
said, graphical appearance of vector objects depends on data attributes. 
And one layer per object type, it is much cleaner.
