Same problem (WARNING ! libtiff version mismatch : You're linking 
against libtiff 3.X but GDAL has been compiled against libtiff >= 4.0.0, 
another solution (Ubuntu 11.10): Uninstall libgdal1-1.6.0 (and all 
dependencies).

I had installed both gdal 1.6 and 1.8 (because automatic update) and 1.6 
was the problem.
