several unilateral buffers : buffers only on one side (toward ocean) and no
toward continent."

If you create your buffer of the continental edge then erase (use the
"difference" geoprocessing function) the continental side with the continent
feature you'll get a unilateral buffer.  Use the buffer as the "input vector
layer" and the continental feature as the "difference layer.  This process
assumes the continent data set has a polygon geometry.
