[Qgis-user] clipping shapefiles

hi all,

i have loaded the entire shapefile of NYS streets from the clearing house
and is much to large for qgis to smoothely run, so.....i am familiar with
clipping, but am not sure how to slip out the section of dutchess county
that i am interested in. can anyone help me do this?
