[Qgis-user] downsample dem in qgis?

Hello, I've read in the gdal wiki that there is the potential to downsample
a dem when using gdal_translate. However I cannot figure out what
parameters to set in order to do so if running the command from either QGIS
or shell.

My goal is to downsample dems to make more generalized shaded reliefs.

Any advice would be appreciated, I'm on mac os 10.6 with qgis 1.8.
