Hi Rick!

More than one option (as always with computers)

You said you have selected the states you want to include in the shape
.. well:

First of all to edit a shape file you have to switch it to edit mode ..
probably you have already done that.
Then you can select some polygons (they should now have small red dots
at their nodes) - One way would be to select the polygons you don't want
to have - and delete them ..

Or (maybe without switching to editing mode - though not tested now) you
have to select the states you want to have in the (new) shapefile (with
CTRL pressed you can select more than one at a time) - right click on
the layer and say "Save selection as" - You will than create a new
shapefile including the selected polygons..
