I forgot to send this back to the list, and am doing so now.

Ok, a few other thoughts.
1. You can always save a selection from the shape file as a new shapefile. That might be easier than starting new, especially if your new claim is the same shape as on old claim.
2. The GPS bit is also possible. You'll need the nodes from the box (Vector -> Geometry Tools) saved in WGS84. From that that you can make a GPX file.
