IMHO we need a way to support multiple versions of everything, with a
detection mechanism, and a switch.
We implemented this for GRASS.
Probably this will require some duplication of code, but it is just
impossible to be sure all the sw is aligned across all platforms.
of course, help and contributions welcome.
