[Qgis-user] Naming of attribute columns in joined files

I am aware of the 10 digit limitation in dbf.

Qgis 1.8.0 did not create those long names when saving joins - it just used
the attribute names from the joined file not including the filename.

I was wondering if there is (or should be) an option to choose how columns
are named (long/short)?
