[Qgis-user] Copy/Paste features to existing or new layer

I am new to QGIS, having used Manifold for the past several years. I have
exported some test data to a PostGIS database and created a test map with
some sample layers. I am running QGIS 2.2.0 x64 on Windows 7.
*What I've done:* I select some features and go Edit > Cut/Copy Features...
If I select *Edit > Paste Features as > New [Memory] Vector Layer* I get the
error message *Cannot create field TextCol (varchar,QString)*
If I paste onto an existing layer only attribute data from columns with
matching names is copied and if there is a type mis-match the edit can't be
commited.
*Question:* What is the best way to copy/cut features and paste them onto a
new/existing layer layer?
