Hi all I thought I would post the solution to my problem in case anyone has a similar thing happen. It turns out that something was wrong with my configuration file $HOME/.config/QGIS/QGIS2.conf. I removed the file, started QGIS 2.12, and it works just fine. Lewis Hein
