Since QGIS 2.14 you can control the features rendering order using an expression.

Hi folks,

Is it possible in QGIS to sort shapes (without topology) by area size and display it in this order (small area above largest area below)? In my shapes I can’t see polygons small areas because the bigger areas overlap complete. Tranceparency is not the best way. ;-(
