Hi Pat,
do you want to clip your layer to current canvas extend? You can do that by creating a new (temporary) polygon layer, create a rectangle that represents your canvas extend and use Vector -> Geoprocessing Tools -> Intersection. Maybe not the most elegant way but should work. Alternatively you can do some scripting that uses current canvas extend.
