Hi Mike,
I've used old Linux Mint versions some time ago and I remember the Ubuntu
codename was in
/etc/upstream-release/lsb-release
and/or
/etc/os-release

DISTRIB_CODENAME / UBUNTU_CODENAME variables respectively.

Could you check in your system?
