Thanks to everyone who replied, the support here is fantastic!!! I love using QGIS & being part of the community!

Following the suggestions you have given me, I have exactly trawl_stationtrawl_stnthe workflow I'm trying to achieve.

The qlr file includes the data source, which is not what I need, I need the standalone form as a file which can be shared and applied to a layer (Postgis table, spatialite table, shapefile, etc, but all with the same columns).

The qml file for just the form works perfectly...

In the project where I created the form:
Layer -> Properties -> Style -> Save style
select just the form, give it a name, click OK & I have my form safely exported...

In a new project, open a dataset with the same attribute structure,
Layer -> Properties -> Style -> Load style
browse to the file I just saved, click Load style

Works perfectly on tables & shapefiles.

And special thanks to Nyall who developed the new form functionality that lets me create data entry forms like this one... hopefully it will be useful for others as well!!

Cheers
