Hi,
Your data is your data! It will be safe if you keep it safe. If you have any concerns regarding the safety of QGIS, send a mail to the NRCAN Canadian mapping service in Sherbrooke Quebec. They use QGIS and other products. Between you and me, I would stick with QGIS as ArcGIS could lock you into proprietary file formats. I would say ArcGIS is the best alternative to QGIS!
