I am going to teach a two week basic GIS course (with QGIS and R)
to conservation ecologists/ornithologists in Nigeria. Skills that
I expect the students to learn are amongst others: mapping of
habitat, organisms, roads, rivers with GPS (and to get data into
GIS), analyse DEMs & rainfall raster data, make use of
satellite imagery and do basic analysis on basis of the
combination of data obtained. Stuff like that.

I am looking for (free) resources that could help me to be as
effective as possible. I'd appriciate to hear about other people's
experience; find slides and texts for the students to read.

Hello Eelke:
I'll be developing a GIS tutorial based on the OSGeo Live DVD. This
tutorial is targeted for Ministry of Agriculture staff in many
countries around the world, and aimed specifically at pest
management programs (tsetse, fruit fly etc.) The tutorial will cover
basic use of QGIS, adding GPS data, inserting data into a Spatialite
database, doing queries between tabular and spatial tables, and
creating printable maps. I will not be getting into the satellite
imagery or habitat mapping with R, as you will.
My intention is to make screen captures of the various GIS
procedures, using the OSgeo LiveDVD, then incorporate those videos
back into the LiveDVD, so that trainees will be able to watch the
tutorial and do the exercises *in the same identical environment*.
This project will probably take months to complete (not my "day
job"). But I'd certainly like to exchange experiences and material,
and hopefully to learn from each other.

Caveat: I don't know to what extent the contracting organization
will allow sharing of the final tutorial, but I intend to bring up
the issue with them.

Regards,
Micha
