If you have a shape file it should have also a *.prj file. This file defines the projection of your layer. By default, Qgis assumes that your data is a lat lon wgs84 and coordinate units degrees. If you have your *.prj file try this first<div><br></div><div>Open QGis, load the layer select it and choose set project crs from layer</div><div><br></div><div>If that does not do the trick try opening the prj file in a text editor and try to identify your CRS (Coordinate Reference System). Then, in Qgis, after loading your layer, Go to layer properties/General choose the specify button and look for your crs in the "Projected Coordinate Systems" section.
