I'm not a SAR guy so I can't answer the questions with any
authority. It really depends on what your capabiltiies are (I
expect that changes over time), and what your needs are. The long
term answer is you should talk to your mapping end-users and see
what they would like (anything from paper maps to digital systems on
hand-helds) and put together a plan. In the short term, you could
do a small pilot project using GeoBC data to see what you can
achieve quickly.

But, if I had to answer the questions today:

1. Yes

2. Datasets required:
2.1 Satellite Imagery for the most up-to-date imagery (but the
resolution tends to be low)
2.2 Ortho photos for high resolution imagery (but might be a
few years old)
2.3 TRIM 1:20k vector data (good for use in Google Earth and
QGIS)
2.4 DEMs for terrain analysis (I'm not sure if QGIS can do
analysys, but it could at least color code by height or hill shade)

3. Formats prefered:
3.1 KML for instant use in Google Earth and QGIS
3.2 PDF for instant printing (but useless in most GIS and
mapping systems)
3.3 Shapefiles for maximum compatibility with other GIS and
mapping systems
Hi all

Our search and rescue group is being offered (possibly) some
mapping from government.

I am only at the toe dipping in stage of using qgis (or any gis).

I need to answer the questions in this email. We have google
earth and qgis at our base. (and some garmin mapping software too,
I believe).
Can I asked the assemble wisdom for any pointers please? Many
thanks :)
