Currently there are only static solutions for road shields using marker lines. No way to dynamically fill in road nrs from db fields.<br>
<br>
Over at the qgis-dev list we discussed your request. Larry Schaffer plans to work on it, extending the current label engine to have background shapes.<br>

You have to be patient. Will take a couple weeks.<br>
<br>
If you would be willing to pay for the development it would speed up things.<br>

If you want to export your map to pdf or svg you should use new-style labelling (the Icon with the letters “ABC” on the toolbar), otherwise export fails.
