More than one option (as always with computers)<br>

You said you have selected the states you want to include in the
shape .. well:<br>
<br>
First of all to edit a shape file you have to switch it to edit mode
.. probably you have already done that.<br>
Then you can select some polygons (they should now have small red
dots at their nodes) - One way would be to select the polygons you
don't want to have - and delete them ..<br>
<br>
Or (maybe without switching to editing mode - though not tested now)
you have to select the states you want to have in the (new)
shapefile (with CTRL pressed you can select more than one at a time)
- right click on the layer and say "Save selection as" - You will
than create a new shapefile including the selected polygons..<br>
