I'm not sure what you call the thing that looks like a separator
(small widget with |||) but I was apparently able to "hide" the
expressions through some sort of newly acquired skill. it is now
Unhiden - and now back to selecting features through expressions.

I've go two Ubuntu 14.04 machines. I upgraded both from 2.4. <br>

One machine is fine. One machine is missing the expression portion
of the select by expression. <br>

I've uninstalled qgis. I've renamed my .qgis2 folder. I've
reinstalled QGIS...and still - No expression (even rebooted). <br>

So - what do I need to install that I'm missing? Or what should I
do I'm not doing. <br>
