Hi,
To my knowledge, no. You can automate it via the Processing toolbox
in a Model which can bulk process the data for you. (How are you
thinking of doing the bulk processing?) From there, you can use the
SAGA, GRASS or GDAL raster calculators. Keep in mind that if your
layers don't have a null value to start with, The QGIS raster
calculator it will not create one. If your null value is 0, then
the resulting rasters will use that as a null value.
Maybe someone else has a bright idea...

As I originally mentioned I tried the gdal_translate route but I
am looking for a way of doing this using the raster calculator as
one can do in other GISs. I didn't state that the reason is, once
I get this down right, I will turn over the procedure to be
automated by others for bulk processing so I am looking for a
means of doing it in one statement. So my question is, "Does the
QGIS raster calculator have this ability?" (rather than as part of
the Model Builder).

You see, I am the one around here pushing the use of QGIS our
agency's research tool, rather than others. If I can not figure
out a way to do it within the Raster Calculator when most of the
other GISs can, well I put at a severe disadvantage. So please
persevere with me on this.

Thank you, Bob
