Now I understand what you want to do. No, it is not possible for
now. Can you open a feature request at <a href="http://hub.qgis.org/" target="_blank">http://hub.qgis.org/</a> ?<br>

The "pseudo-layers" for categories in the legend tree are quite new
and haven't been fully polished for such cases.<br>
<br>
I think it would be a very useful addition, being able to toggle all
categories of a layer.<br>

Are you talking about symbology? If yes - what renderer
are you talking about? Simple, Categorized, Graduated,
rule based?<br>
