Hi
Srtm have many versions with two pixel sizes. 30 m and 90m (at the equator). Version has gaps, version two has gap filling for water and small hole and version 3 has gap replacement in larger areas. Gaps are caused by radar shadows. Big gaps are filled using secondary dems. The are all downloadable for free. The latest version in srtmGL1 of the 30m pixels. NASA is currently working on a new version called NASA dems. If the are existent for your region, use those.
Hi,

ALOS World 3D - 30m (AW3D30) data may be also considered an
alternative (http://www.eorc.jaxa.jp/ALOS/en/aw3d30/), for the time
being already available for substantial parts of Southern Asia and
South America. Informations on how resolution and error margins of the
dataset compare to ASTERDEM or SRTM30 will be appreciated.

Cheers
Hi,

this is not an answer to your question but what I do is to load images
with an URL pointing to one of our internal web servers. This works
perfectly in templates being loaded on different machines with different
OS, too.
