As a follow up, might I suggest another option, create the legend
Block items as you wish<br>
Export the legend blocks as an image and insert .<br>
This will of course mean that if you restyle the layer you will have
to redo the image, but its another option to try.<br>

Shift is the standard used in layout/illustration packages. Ctrl
clicking cycles through selecting overlapping elements.
