<br>it 99-nofile.con in it I increased the hard limit to 65536.  Check

<br>/etc/security/limits.conf for examples.  Then I rebooted now I've been

able to work with projects with thousands of shapefiles with no problem.

I have lots of memory(128GB) which might be a factor as well.
