Hi Tyler,

Not so sure about textures - so they display, but upside down? Perhaps it is an issue with vertex ordering (clockwise vs. anti-clockwise). I had building models (3D Multipolygons) where the models were rendered inside out. According to Martin Dobias, this is an issue with vertex ordering, and I do hope that when QGIS 3 is shipped, that there will be an option to set the vertex ordering with a checkbox or radiobutton.

As to the 3D raster DEM: this definitely works. In the 3D view you have to press the "Configure" button in the top-left of the 3D window - the button with the screw-wrench. In the dialog that opened you can choose the raster layer with the DEM.

Depending on the size of the DEM, the triangulation of the raster DEM may take a few seconds.

Hope this helps and greetings,

Andreas

QGIS 3 is going to be awesome, well it is now, I just added my model to a 3D map as a model point and it looks pretty good. I used a number of methods in COLLADA; no texture, texture, photo texture, edges, 2 sided edges, etc.. they all seem to work. The only thing I will note is that the Photo Textures are upside down on the faces.

As for the base data, I added a rasterized DEM but it doesn't seem to display as 3D, it looks more like a flat hillshade.

Anyway this is a newer QGIS than what I am use too and still in Dev stages so I am sure I am just overlooking something or if it is an issue it will be fixed by release.

Anyway, this is great. Thanks for the help.

COLLADA works brilliantly, I would like to try JSON as well. Mine didn't have any texture to it, the model came in black don't know if textures are not supported yet or if the model doesn't have one, will look into it further. I have not tested this in the QGIS 3 beta yet but will soon.

DXF's of building models crash both QGIS systems. They came from Sketchup but I used AutoCAD to simplify them a bit as well with no luck.

Hi Karl,

QGIS native 3D already supports 3D models:

Hi!

I'm playing around with the possibilities of 3D-building in the qgis2threejs-plug-in. You can use collada models, exportable from Sketchup, on point features in the plug-in. So I've made a point on the desired building, attached the model and a proper scaling. I've had some luck with it but think it will be hard to to for more than a few buildings at a time. Would be nice to hear if you make progress in either way.

Hi Tyler,

3D visualization will be a core feature in QGIS 3.

If you want to play with 3D visualization, I recommend that you try/test QGIS 3, even if it is still in bug fixing mode and not officially released.

You can either use the OSGeo4W installer and install the dev version or use the weeklies (the newest one published at http://qgis.org/downloads/weekly/?C=M;O=D).
