<p>No - it shouldn't be necessary to recreate your project. It is probably just a setting.</p>
<p>Can you snap to the vertices of the vector layer you want to trace along? If not, can you at least select features in the layer you want to trace along?</p>
<p>There are a number of settings that could prevent snapping and tracing:</p>
<p>- in the project settings you could have set a layer to not being able to select</p>
<p>- the snap settings might have strange settings (map units, bad distances).</p>
<p>Can you share the snap settings of the layer you want to trace along (a screenshot of the digitizing toolbar or advanced snapping dock?)</p>
<p>But once you can snap, then you should also be able to trace.</p>

<p>Are you trying to trace along other existing vector features (built-in QGIS functionality) or based on a raster layer with the tracing plugin?</p>
<p>For the former: you might have disabled the snapping options for the layers you want to trace along, or simply have disabled tracing. Have you checked the snapping toolbar and more specifically the tracing button? It might also be the case, that the snapping-tolerances do not work, e.g. when you have set them to map units with a bad scale combo - instead of pixel values.</p>

I do not know what I did differently, but the program will not trace anymore. I also have problems all of a sudden to use topological editing. </span></p>
