For example, if you CRS is in longitude-latitude, then coordinates in degrees could look like 55.12345, -25.12345. If you select a projected CRS for this layer, then degrees will be interpreted as meters or feet. Add a base layer (like a global map found in the quickmap plugin) select the layer and click zoom to layer.
