Peter: thanks for the feedback, and good points. The README should definitely
have these caveats. Comments from OGC proper would be valued. Contributions
on the README/codebase are also welcome. A build/release process will be
very straightforward to ensure keeping up to date, which will be triggered
off the RSS feed on http://schemas.opengis.net/

Having said this, if OGC were interested to stand up such a package in
authority, this would be much preferred over my initial proposal.

being an active OGC standards writer myself I'd say: OGC standards are free &
open, so no problem duplicating them elsewhere, as long as 2 caveats are followed:
- should be clearly marked as a non-authoritative copy
- is on risk of getting outdated, obviously, unless some "nightly" pull
mechanism gets installed

But this is just me, informally, who gets his hands dirty with doing stuff - for
sure an official OGC position should be sought.

my 2 cents,
Hi all: just wanted to bump the following:

http://osgeo-org.1560.x6.nabble.com/OGC-XML-schemas-and-FOSS4G-software-distribution-td5186023.html

Has there been any further discussion between OGC / OSGeo in this regard?

Having said this, I've started drafting a Python package [1] which
will bundle http://schemas.opengis.net and make it available, along
with an XML catalog, to downstream applications for ease of use. For
applications who use the OGC Schemas to do realtime validation and store
the schemas in the codebase, this will provide that package, thus reducing
schemas in codebases. The plan will be to make OS packages
packages (Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, etc.), allowing for any application to
leverage.
