[Tilecache] TileCache - serving as untiled wms

Hello all.

I have been wondering about how use WMS-C or other tiled WMS services with apps that support only WMS (untiled).

How fast would it be to merge tiles and cut-out the resulting image to answer a standard untiled bbox request?

The idea is that servers running TileCache would be able to also serve WMS clients. What's the benefit? Why not use the original WMS server? I'm guessing it would be faster and with lighter loads, even though TileCache would have to crunch several tiles together and clip the resulting image...
But there would be problems with resolution... since WMS clients don't care about fixed scales/resolutions. So you would serve ugly looking imagens in-between tile resolutions...

Any thoughts?
