Recently there was a discussion on debian-java list[1] that JAI is
orphaned for years and totally unmaintained.  The best idea would be to
inform those upstreams who are keep on using this as dependency to seek
for some better maintained alternative.  (I personally would think that
the discussion works better if you can come up with a positive
suggestion for a replacement but I'm not Java educated.)

As I said I'd hapily support this attempt via the Debian GIS route[2].
