Hi List,

Just some advance notice of the upcoming QGIS UK User Group meeting in Edinburgh on 3rd November. Thanks to Tom Armitage we've managed to get the Informatics Forum again and are looking at a full programme of talks (and possibly some hands-on workshops) about QGIS and FOSS4G.

Art Lembo
Terrain analysis with massively parallel processing techniques: a QGIS plugin developed with pyCUDA and NVIDIA graphics cards

This presentation will discuss the development and results of a QGIS plugin using pyCUDA and the NVIDIA graphics card to perform massively parallel processing for terrain functions such as slope, aspect, and hillshade. The functionality focuses on what are known as embarrassingly parallel solutions, to which 3x3, 5x5, and other kernel sizes are well suited. While previous work used C++ libraries, this plug-in was developed using pyCUDA so that it might be more readily accessible to other FOSS4g developers who wish to expand on its functionality. Early results indicate dramatic improvements in processing time for terrain analysis. In addition, the presentation will also discuss how multi-threaded Python libraries can be used in conjunction with CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture) functions, as well as performing multi-core processing of traditional vector analysis within QGIS and Postgres.

Phil Taylor

Title: Using QGIS for Wildlife Surveying, Recording and Reporting
Description: Taylor Wildlife are a small ecological consultancy based in Moray who specialise in upland wildlife and habitat surveying and monitoring across Scotland. This talk will explain how we use QGIS as an aid to the surveying and recording process during the field season and for producing ecological reports afterwards.

A free one-day mini FOSS4G event made possible by sponsorship from Ordnance Survey, thinkWhere, Cawdor Forestry and Angus Council.

Tickets will be made available on Eventbrite very soon.

If you would like to present something on the day (QGIS or FOSS4G) then please get in touch. The more the merrier.
