<div dir="ltr">Hi Rachel,<div><br></div><div>Thanks for subscribing to the OSGeo UK mailing list. In answer to your second question first- about the map projections- the gotcha is probably that you need to allow QGIS to switch between different projections "on the fly". The easiest way to make this work is to open a blank QGIS project, then go to File/Project Properties and choose the Coordinate Reference System tab. Tick the box marked "enable on the fly CRS transformation" and then in the filter box type 27700 (the EPSG code for British National Grid). If you select that and click the "apply" button and then "OK" to close the window, you should see in the bottom right-hand corner of your QGIS window that you're now in British National Grid/EPSG:27700. If you now add your nuts 3 data (which I'm assuming you've grabbed from here: <a href="http://epp.eurostat.ec.europa.eu/portal/page/portal/gisco_Geographical_information_maps/popups/references/administrative_units_statistical_units_1" target="_blank">http://epp.eurostat.ec.europa.eu/portal/page/portal/gisco_Geographical_information_maps/popups/references/administrative_units_statistical_units_1</a> and then something from the UK, you should now see that the data overlays itself correctly.</div>
<div><br></div><div>One thing that you might find really useful if you're learning QGIS is the new manual: <a href="http://docs.qgis.org/html/en/docs/user_manual/index.html" target="_blank">http://docs.qgis.org/html/en/docs/user_manual/index.html</a></div>
<div><br></div><div>I'm not sure what sort of economic data that you're using, but the best way of getting data that automatically updates itself is to find datasets that use web mapping services (WMS) rather than static mapinfo or shapefiles. <a href="http://Data.gov.uk" target="_blank">Data.gov.uk</a> has a lot of these. You add them into QGIS in a similar way to adding a static file, only you choose "Add WMS layer", and you give it a web address rather than a file location. An example of this is the British Geological Survey- <a href="http://data.gov.uk/dataset/bgs-detailed-bedrock-and-superficial-geology-ogc-wxs" target="_blank">http://data.gov.uk/dataset/bgs-detailed-bedrock-and-superficial-geology-ogc-wxs</a>. The "direct link" in the page I've just linked to is what you'd need to add in QGIS. The relevant section of the manual is here: <a href="http://docs.qgis.org/html/en/docs/user_manual/working_with_ogc/ogc_client_support.html#wms-client" target="_blank">http://docs.qgis.org/html/en/docs/user_manual/working_with_ogc/ogc_client_support.html#wms-client</a></div>
<div><br></div><div>Finally, you might want to get in touch with the people from the AGI Scotland group, as I think they are doing a workshop on open source fairly soon- Abigail Page lurks on this list and is involved in that event so should be able to give you some more information on it.</div>
<div><br></div><div>Hope that all helps, and don't hesitate to shout if you need more help!</div><div><br></div><div style>All the best</div><div style><br></div><div style>Jo</div></div><div class="gmail_extra"><br><br>

<div><font face="Arial"><span>Hello
everyone,</span></font></div>
<div><font face="Arial"><span></span></font> </div>
<div><font face="Arial"><span>I am new to mapping
and am in need of some advice and guidance. I have previously posted on
the non-uk mailing list but have some questions that are more specific
to the UK. Apologise if anyone receives both.</span></font></div>
<div><font face="Arial"><span></span></font> </div>
<div><font face="Arial"><span>My project basically
involves collating internal and external data and displaying it on a map within
the company's intranet to share with all staff. </span></font></div>
<div><font face="Arial"><span></span></font> </div>
<div><font face="Arial"><span>The internal data is
on IBM Cognos. This information is updated in real time and
needs to be displayed on the map in real time. Following recommendations
from IBM, my company installed MapInfo to display outputs. It took 32 weeks
to get it but they did. The problem is that it is only on one
computer at a different office from me and apparently the training is really
expensive and it sounds really hard to use without the training. I would
like to see if it would be possible to use QGIS as so far it has been easy to
use and available on my own PC.</span></font></div>
<div><font face="Arial"><span></span></font> </div>
<div><font face="Arial"><span>The other question
is that I am wondering if there are any existing databases that stores
up-to-date economic data so the maps I create could update themselves
automatically once my placement ends. If such a thing doesn't exist I am
considering creating and maintaining once when I go back to consultancy once my
placement ends. </span></font></div>
<div><font face="Arial"><span></span></font> </div>
<div><font face="Arial"><span>One other little
problem I've been having, I've managed to open the shapefiles for the european
boundry lines of nuts 3, but the map seems to be distorted. I gather it is
something to do with the map projections. I tried various different ones
but the map either stayed the same or disappeared completely.
