Tyler,

The page http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Drupal_Portal_Translations states 
"This description only applies for normal web pages of content type 
'page' - not to events or news items."

Are you saying that that text is incorrect, and all news items are 
accessed and translated through the Drupal 'translator' role?
