[OSGeo Africa] FOSS GIS business opportunity

Gavin,

I think the idea of clearinghouse for FOSS GIS business opportunities is an
excellent idea. But why not make it an Africa wide initiative? Most African
countries seem to be embracing OS and there are many opportunities that
might pop-up elsewhere.

Cheers

Craig

Subject: [OSGeo Africa] FOSS GIS business opportunity

I presented on FOSS GIS to the Gauteng GIS forum yesterday. Keep your eyes
open for a tender in about a month's time to develop a module of the Gauteng
Provincial Government GIS. Their system is Oracle spatial + ESRI and they
will consider a FOSS solution for this module. This is an opportunity to
show what FOSS GIS can do...

To continue on this thread, what do you think of a web-based 'clearinghouse'
of such FOSS GIS business opportunities?

Gauteng is the smallest province in South Africa yet it is our economic
heartland. The Gauteng gov GIS forum consists of Provincial Directorate GIS
departments as well as Metro and municipal GIS departments from across the
province. They currently use no FOSS GIS anything, but the government FOSS
policy will ensure that this situation changes. A big need seems to be for
guidance on change management from proprietary to FOSS.
