Hey Jaco

Is your SRTM data perhaps in lat/long? If so then the value is metres
elevation change over horizontal distance in degrees expressed as a
percentage, which is a biiig number. The slope values are still correct
as relative values.

Transform your srtm to a projected CRS and you'll get a recognisable %
value (and a more accurate result).
