​There is no new group, only new and diverse channels of
comunication....its good to use different channels - some people like the
immediacy of online chat, some like the ability to digest their
convesations via email. I was only pointing to the QGIS channel  by way of
example of what we would get if we would get if osgeo-africa formed a chat
room on gitter.im (and also similar to what you would get on slack since
the experience is almost the same).​

​​And by the way forming special interest groups is not a bad thing (I'm
not sure why you used such pejorative ​ language above) - if people want to
share experiences and dive into detail in one particular topic area it's
just a normal and healthy process of a community. osgeo-africa list is
itself an example of this - otherwise we would all be subscribed to the
parent osgeo list and not have regional chapters. And yes I believe there
is still some affiliation with GISSA - Gavin could probably answer better
exactly what that is.
