Dear OSGeo Member,
Being an active QGIS power user and great QGIS fan myself I, in
collaboration with Kartoza (http://www.kartoza.com), have decided to
investigate the feasibility of starting a QGIS user group for South Africa
(maybe even Southern Africa) to promote the use of QGIS and other Free and
Open-Source GIS (FOSSGIS) applications in the ever increasing market of
closed-source and mostly expensive GIS software. The user group should be
mainly focussed on the functionality of QGIS (presentation and discussion
on new functions after new releases), the exchange of success stories,
proposals for new functions/plug-ins, sharing of problems/bugs and
workarounds and, last but not least, contributions (financial and/or
development) for the great development team around the world.
To set up a user group is a huge task and requires a lot of organisation.
The plan for now is to firstly gauge the support for such a group, which
could start quite informal in the economic centres of Cape Town and
surrounds and Gauteng, maybe twice a year, in the form of a get-together,
mainly to get ideas on the format of the meetings and the number and
background of interested QGIS users. Then a more formal structure could be
set up by a number of volunteers to conform with rules and organisation of
the other user groups around the world
(http://www.qgis.org/en/site/forusers/usergroups.html).
We are also planning an OSGeo + QGIS +++ conference for the end of June
2017 in Johannesburg. So it would be great to have a few local QGIS user
group meetings leading up to that. Our first informal get-together could
therefore be in October or November this year already!
The purpose of this email is therefore to find out if you are interested in
joining such a user group by filling in the short form below or clicking on
the link at the top of the mail to fill in the form in your web browser.
Regards
Immo
