[OSGeo Africa] Unable to read or open previously saved QGIS projects

Hi Marshall

A couple more thoughts to add to the conversation:

1) QGIS 1.8 is really old. I highly recommend that you use the latest Long Term Release (LTR) version of QGIS (currently 2.14.6) for your tuition. Among other things QGIS 2.14 has a feature that automatically saves a backup copy of your project and will try to restore it if you have a crash which corrupts your project.

2) I would encourage your students to use the Consolidate plugin: http://plugins.qgis.org/plugins/qconsolidate/
This plugin (its marked as experimental so you need to allow experimental plugins in your plugin settings) will consolidate all of the resources (shape files, tiffs etc) referenced in your project into a single directory structure which can easily be zipped up and transported between computers (or backed up regularly).

Regards

Tim
